Press probe into soil and read resistance to penetration expressed in pounds. Reads from 1 to 20 in unit increments and calibrates easily with adjustment at base of unit. Green Generation model features color-coded scale of recommended readings for the forest industry, agriculture, and turf managers and allows you to calculate soil compaction from 0 to 630.77 psi. Measures 18-3/4” long.

1. A few weeks after daily use, the marker started slipping back down upon removing penetrometer from the ground to take the reading, making readings impossible unless one is literally kneeling down next to the penetrometer when inserting and watching for how high the marker was pushed by the allen screw (also problematic, since the looseness of the marker on its track means that with the force of insertion, it can "jump" higher than is warranted by the soil compactness alone) 2. Cleaning protocol is not indicated, and interior cleaning seems impossible without disassembling, though sediment easily gets inside the apparatus 3. Beware if using in an area with potential root, void space, or rock/pebble interference, as all of these, unobservable from the surface, will greatly alter readings. Widely varying readings are obtained with every insertion in the same 12 sq. in. surface area. Overall, doesn't seem worth what it costs. I bought this model because I assumed the higher price would correlate with greater precision, but so far I don't really have any indication of that being the case.
